In the period of rethinking and reframing of the role of libraries they need to prove competitiveness and to find alternative ways to preserve and enhance its credibility and authority. The article tells how the British libraries managed to preserve cultural traditions, whilst remaining useful and modern, and how the professional library community defends its interests and adapts to the changing requirements of the time.
