The article is connected with the celebration of 150 anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov and book-illustrative exhibition at the RSL, dedicated to this event.

The article is devoted to the problem of senior school students’ civic education. The author gives the definition of “civicism” in respect to senior school age. The theme of social partnership of comprehensive school and municipal library in the decision of this problem on the material of the small native land literary local history is developed in the article.

The article outlines the contours of semiotic approach, based on theoretically elaborated and well-grounded principle of significance, for a more detailed and methodologically based study of the library collection in the context of cultural studies. Library collection as a collective memory of humanity is the complex sign system which is a part of larger system — metasystem (culture). The principle of significance makes it possible to research the communicative character of the collection more fully and to trace its dynamic transformations in the process of culture evolution.

The article presents the results of the research carried out among senior high school students in Kursk and students of the Industry and Education Department of the Kursk State University which revealed the most typical errors of the editorialdesign character committed in the process of independent work. Attendance of a reading room is analyzed. Ways of formation
of information and educational space of a teacher, a student and a pupil from the positions of the system approach by means of cooperation with libraries of various levels are offered.

Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is the basis of Automated Library and Informational System. Linguistic ware quality of OPAC is prerequisite for information service quality. Discussion on the structure of linguistic ware of OPAC and a role of individual informational search languages in it is far from being finished. Its key points are determined in the article. There is also the description of the experiment for comparison of informational languages functional opportunities of State Rubricator (Systematic headings) on Scientific and Technical Information, Library Bibliographical Classification, subject headings and words from documents titles in OPAC of the State Public Scientific and Technical Library, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was described. Hierarchical classification and subject headings language are analyzed. The conditions of subject headings’ usage in the electronic environment are considered.

Nominative, informative, semantic, textual, aesthetic, proeducational, bibliographic functions of Russian manuscript books are considered in the article.

The article is dedicated to the history of development and description of the early printed cyrillic books collection in the Russian National Library in 19th century. The special attention is paid to the circumstances of acquisition and analysis of composition of I. Raratayev’s collection. There is the discussion during 19th century on peculiarities of elaboration and system presentation of the data on the content and accession of Imperial Public Library Cyrillic press collection. Novelty of the research is ensured by including the previously unpublished material from department of archival documents of the Russian National Library.

The problem of increasing the role of libraries in the revival of constant interest and needs of reading. The experience of working with physically limited people on the basis of the Kaluga region is summarized. The structural model of library of “educational -communication” type and own opinion at realization of the National Program for Reading Promotion and Development in Russia are presented

The article is concerned with the characteristic of the striking trend in the French literature of the second half of the 20th century called “New Novel”. The short review of the main features of new novelists’ poetics in the perspective of a writer and a reader relationship is made on the example of the following works: “Jealousy” by A. Robbe-Grillet, “Planetarium” by N. Sarraute, “Changing” by M. Butor.

On the anonymous marginalia in one of the books of the journal “Library for Reading” (“Biblioteka dlya chteniya”) of 1849 (the collection of the Russian State Library), where memoirs of F. Bulgarin were printed.

The attempt to recreate of the creative portrait of Vasily Kudryavtsev — theologian, ethnographer, historian, archivist, the devotee of education, the talented researcher of the local region – was made on the basis of numerous historical sources. His main work “Olden time, monuments, traditions and legends of the Kama region” and is today the reference book for all who is engaged in research of the Vyatka region.

This article is devoted to the library of the politician in Left-bank Ukraine of the 2nd half of the 17th century on the example of the Library of Hetman Ivan Samoylovich. The problem wasn’t earlier studied by researchers, except for separate aspects. The analysis of the library of Ivan Samoylovich allows not only to draw a conclusion on high cultural and educational level of some representatives of the Ukrainian nobility during this period, and about their attachment to culture of maintaining private and family libraries.

The particulars of the development of Belarus libraries in the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania are considered. The article tells about the factors affecting the literary process, writers and public figures left mark in history, the most important chronicles and manuscripts of the time.

The article deals with the librarianship internet research works in the context of their advantages, limitations and related ethical issues.

The article is related to the history of creation and development of the Riazan Ecclesiastical Seminary and its library in the 18-th century. The materials of the Russian State Archives of Ancient Documents (RSAAD), State Archive of the Ryazan Region and other sources are used in it. This let to see the position of the Ecclesiastical Seminary Library in the history of the national enlightenment as well as the role of charity in the formation of the library collections of this educational institution. The author for the first time introduces the document — “The book catalogue of the Ryazan Ecclesiastical Seminary Library” (“Katalog knig biblioteki Ryazanskoi dukhovnoi seminarii”) for scientific use. The article is of interest for historians, library scientists, experts in the Russian charity history.

Types of the first public libraries existing in the Nizhniy Novgorod province in the end of 19th — the early 20th century are reviewed. Use of a wide range of sources has allowed to draw conclusions on the importance of their activity for the population of province and provincial city. The role of an educational society in the in the establishment process and the further keeping of public libraries is shown.

The process of searching for new forms and methods of library and bibliographic service for the population of the Republic of Tatarstan in 1985—1991 is shown in the article. The main conclusion of the historical analysis of the problem comes to the conclusion that the existing network of public libraries of the Republic has done much to adapt to new economic and political conditions for the modernization work on the basis of new technologies.

The author gives historical facts based on archival documents confirming possibility of development of library education in the conditions in Russia before the October 1917, and studies the process of development of the first special educational institutions and gives the brief characteristic of the origin of library education.

During the Great Patriotic War (1941—1945) of the staff training in the State Library of the USSR of V.I. Lenin continued on the base of its resources, though and in smaller volume, than before the War. The lecture system was replaced by seminars. This form of education allowed the Library to continue its activity on highly professional level.

Evaluation by N.Dobrynina on the book “Fedor Karatygin: the teacher, the scientist, the man who spearheaded the MGUKI” (to the 80-th anniversary of MGUKI (the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts), written by the daughter of F.Karatygin.

On the establishment by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church the annual Day of an Orthodox book, coincided with the date of the first printed book in Russia “The Apostle” (March 1, 1564, old style) published by Ivan Fyodorov and on the events which were held within the framework of this celebration.
