The Journal was founded in 1952.
The former names of the journal:

• since 1952— Biblioteki SSSR. Opyt Raboty [The USSR Libraries.Work Experience],
• since 1967 — Biblioteki SSSR [The USSR Libraries], 
• since 1973 — Sovietskoye Bibliotekovedenie [Soviet Library Science] (ISSN 0134-6695), 
• since 1993 — Bibliotekovedenie [Russian Journal of Library Science] (ISSN 0869-608X).

Beginning from 2016, the history of creation, development, as well as consistency of the annual publication of the Journal is reflected in the Volume Issue. The journal is issued in volumes with continuous page numbering.  

Scientific-practical peer-reviewed Journal 
Bibliotekovedenie [Russian Journal of Library Science]
is officially certified by the Higher Attestation Commission
of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education
for publishing the main results of dissertation research.
