The Collection of Literature on Library Science, Bibliography and Book Studies is the world’s largest specialized collection of such publications. The collection holds 186 thousand documents, which cover the period from the XVIII century to the present.
Among 73 thousand professional journals and magazines, you can find one of the oldest professional journal — Library Journal, which was founded by Melvil Dewey in 1876. The full archive is stored in the Russian State Library, the first issues have been restored many times as a very important source related to the formation of the librarianship.
The collection includes literature on library science and bibliology, as well as on the related areas of knowledge, encyclopedias, reference books, and language dictionaries. There are presented book editions in Russian and foreign European languages, and in the languages of the peoples of Russia, CIS countries and Baltic States. The collection includes journals, continued and leaf editions, specialized newspapers, databases and electronic documents. Access to network resources is provided. Publications of the Russian State Library are allocated to a separate collection.
A unique resource is the collection of Unpublished Documents and Deposited Scientific Studies on Art and Culture. There are deposited scientific studies and unpublished documents, mainly produced by different libraries: reviews, essays, references, bibliography lists (indexes), methodological, methodical and bibliographical materials, scripts for mass events and festivals, conferences and meetings materials.
In addition, the literature on library science, bibliography and book sciences, which is not included in the collection, can be found in the Central main collection and in such collections as rare and valuable books, literature in Oriental languages, public state and regulatory publications.
The Collection of Network Remote Resources comprises e-books, magazines and newspapers in Russian and foreign languages, images and other types of documents. Available from all computers in the RSL Reading rooms connected to the Internet; some resources are available from computers outside the Library with the RSL Library card.
Nine professionals are always ready to assist in research, find and recommend literature on requested topic. They always help the editorial office of Bibliotekovedenie journal, its authors and reviewers.
